Annual fire servicing inspections are a legal requirement within most business premises under The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2006 and may also be required for your insurance.

A fire extinguisher service involves inspecting each fire extinguisher on site each year and called a Basic Fire Extinguisher Service.
In addition, some fire extinguishers may also require Extended Servicing which is carried every 5 / 10 years depending on the fire extinguisher type. Recharging of fire extinguishers can be carried out if discharged along with Overhauling of Co2 fire extinguishers where relevant. In addition to the above maintenance, the service identifies damaged or non-compliant fire extinguishers in need of replacement.
Fire extinguisher inspection
These checks are required due to parts / seals deteriorating, valves sticking and fire extinguishers simply being damaged whilst part of a building’s fixtures and fittings.
Not only are the 12 monthly fire extinguisher servicing inspections required but you should also be carrying out weekly visual checks on the fire extinguishers and logging them.
Code of Practice
Fire extinguisher servicing and care in accordance with the Code of Practice stipulated in British Standard 5306 part 3 should be integrated into your premises Fire Risk Assessment and is, in effect, a legal requirement of the Fire and rescue services (Northern Ireland) order 2006 and The fire safety safety regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010.
